Alopecia is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the hair follicles, there are many forms but the most common is alopecia areata. Nearly 147 million people around the world have, or will develop alopecia at some point in their life.
Alopecia can occur at any age. It is common for hair to fall out and grow back in cycles. Everyone's alopecia journey is unique and different to them. Some hair begins to thin over the course of years, while some can completely fall out within months.
Although the disease is asymptomatic, it can take a heavy emotional toll on those who endure it. People with alopecia tend to struggle with higher levels of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and poor body image.
Even though alopecia is life-changing, this does not have to be a bad thing.
